30 May ... Greensboro, NC ... Coliseum
Foghat/BOC May 30, 1975...Wow that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, known as Greensboro, NC. The fact that Greensboro had the Coliseum and that great bands and tours came through there still amazes me. The Coliseum is much bigger now and almost no bands come there anymore and there is no professional sports team anymore either. I saw a lot of shows at the GCC from '74 to about '78, my formative junior high and high school years. I am pretty sure I would be a much duller socially incomplete person than I am now, had it not been for the GCC and all the great bands of the 70's that came thru there.
May 30, 1975 had to be a friday or saturday night. Driving to the show in a 60's vintage white something or other stationwagon with my crazy friend Doug. We are drinking beers out of bottles with straws for some reason. Pick up 2 hitch hiker guys who look like they might be headed to the concert. They are dressed in hawaian shirts and are wearing "pukka" bead necklaces. Very DAZED & CONFUSED looking, the movie I mean. We did not dress like that in 75-76. We dressed like the Saxon song DENIM & LEATHER, jean jackets, jeans, chambray work shirt and leather dingo boots or hiking boots. These guys looked kind of strange and now they were in Doug's car headed to the Foghat show. We offered them beers and straws. They accepted the beers but not the straws, kept kinda quiet and as soon as we pulled into the GCC parking lot and came to a stop they bolted from the car. "You're welcome", Doug said and we looked at each other kind of puzzled at their behavior.
Anyway on to the show. Festival seating which meant no seating at all. We created a mosh pit before anyone knew it had a name. Foghat takes the stage. Heads are bobin' and toes are tappin', lighters are in the air along with some very pungent, ropey odors. GCC was known for a very laid back attitude about Marijuana. Ushers and tickets takers in their 50's were known to get stoned just breathing the air workin' the shows. There seemed to be a few women in the crowd who were screaming and yelling at band members, trying to get noticed and invited back stage and I seem to remember the boys in the band obliging their wishes. At that time, I remember all I wanted to be and all my friends wanted to be was a Roadie. A Roadie for Foghat. Except maybe Doug, he wanted to be a Roadie for Alice Cooper. At this show the Foghat roadies were seen plucking said women from the audience, up on stage and then back stage never to be seen again.
Ah yes the roadie life for me. Foghat was great a
s usual and always. BOC was headliner that night and put on a great show as well. We would see the boogie brothers again in 76. Foghat Forever!
