Foghat Concert Reviews 1980

14 August... Fresno, CA ... Selland Arena

The opening acts this night were Point Blank, who were just ok by my standards, and Blackfoot, who were awsome, and really blew me away. When Foghat hit the stage the whole place was ready to explode. We were more than ready from the first notes of the night, 'til the last notes of Slow Ride. On the encore, the boys were so on this night, it was amazing. Truly the best time that I ever saw them. I saw them several times later in the ninety's in Merced, CA also in Modesto, not long before Lonesome Dave's passing, but the Fresno show was the best one by far. In the middle of the set, Lonesome Dave came out and did Third Time Lucky, all by himself, on the piano. It give's me chills to this day to recall this. Rod 's playing was awsome, totally flawless this night ,and the tightness of Roger and Craig was crushing. I spoke to Roger years later about this show, and he actually remembered this show, apparently his brother was arrested in Fresno this night for somthing!! We both laughed about it. what a great memory and what a Great band!!!!

7 November ..... Hempstead, NY ..... Nassau Coliseum

I remember this show as my favorite concert ever, because not only was the concert everything I had hoped for, but I had dreamed about seeing Foghat for years since I became a fan. In high school I was forever trying to put the "Live" album on the turntable at parties. I tried always to have my vinyl copy with me when I went, and I used to skank around watching who was in charge of the music until he/she took a piss break.

I was attending West Point Preparatory School in Fort Monmouth, NJ at the time and my roomie Chris Porras and I were huge Rock and Roll fans. When the local NY radio station announced that Foghat was playing Nassau on the 7th, we prayed we would have furlough that weekend...and our prayers were answered. Chris, myself and a couple of friends of ours drove up to the city for the show without tickets hoping to score. I thought we might have trouble, but the show was not a sell-out so we had no trouble at all. Our seats weren't that great, but we manuevered to better ones and settled in. I had never been to the Coliseum, so I can't really describe it to you but the acoustics were good and our view was likewise.

The lineup was Foghat followed by The Outlaws. Not bad, but I thought it should have been in reverse order. When Foghat came on, they blew us away...the two other dudes from USMAPS could not believe how tight this band sounded. I kept telling them how great this band was and how Rod Price and Lonesome Dave made the band sound like they had 3-4 guitars playing at once, but they wouldn't believe me until they saw for themselves. It has been over 20 years since I saw them so I don't remember the song lineup, but I can tell you this: they did two encores and absolutely blew the opening band away...so bad that my friends and I all fell asleep during the Outlaws performance. (no disrespect intended, but we were spent in more than one way)

I have probably seen 30-40 shows since, to include The Dead (3-4 times), Pink Floyd, The Stones, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and many more but I will never, ever forget Foghat.

14 November ..... Richfield, OH ..... Richfield Coliseum

This concert was billed as "Double Trouble" as Foghat and the Outlaws set up shop in the Richfield Coliseum. It wasn't a sellout, but not far from it. Maybe 15-17 thousand fans showing. The band that earned the reputation for blowing other bands off the stage started the evening with spotlights hitting a big crystal ball as the strains of an orchestrated "pomp & circumstance" filled the arena. Foghat opened with Stone Blue and My Babe followed. They performed about 3 numbers from the new Tight Shoes album namely Stranger In My Hometown-Loose Ends-Dead End Street which were very well received. The barnstorming Honey Hush blew us away and Dave's solo piano version of Third Time Lucky as the house lights went down drew a standing ovation. The jamming continued with Fool For The City and a version of Slow Ride that just floored us all, I was literally numb. Foghat left the stage and returned for IJWMLTY and again kicking out the jams for the second encore of Maybelline that just went on forever. I have never seen Foghat eclipse what they did that night and I've seen them 18-20 times thru the years (call me obsessive). [Editor's note: that's not obsessive, that's good taste] This show remains the very best concert I have ever witnessed by anyone. Dave, Craig, Rod, and Roger melted the stage that night, and with rod "hanging up the pick" so to say with 2 shows left. I believe he gave it everything he had, and nobody would argue that.
