Foghat Concert Reviews 1983

Concert Reviews '83

7 October... Wheeling, IL ... Haymaker's

Foghat was my favorite band as a teenager (and maybe later). I have seen them in concert twice. The first time was in 77 in Seattle playing backup to Peter Frampton. They were a really great show.

The next time I saw them was during college in 1983 in Wheeling, Illinois with a few of my college friends including Mark Holme, Steve Lewis, and Tom Hendrie. Wheeling is a suburb of Chicago. They were playing in a small club called Haymakers. The tickets were around $8. When I saw the concert advertised I just could not believe that one of the greatest rock bands of all time was playing in such a small venue.

Anyway what I remember so vividly is being able to stand around 15 feet away from the band. They played an incredible show. The stage was elevated around 1-2 feet above the club floor. I would estimate the crowd size was around 750 people. The only thing between the crowd and the band was a line of approximately 12 bouncers with their arms linked. We were standing close to front row for this concert. Everyone was standing. The concert was deafeningly loud.

It was just amazing to be so close to what I consider one the greatest rock bands of all time. Even though it was a few years after their peak, they were still excellent. For me the real show stoppers were "Fool for the City" and "Slow Ride." I had a tinge of sadness realizing now that they were now playing in front of less than 1000 people, rather than the 50,000+ at the previous Foghat/Frampton concert I was at. Still ... what a band and what a concert!

9 October ..... Breakaway Theatre ..... Akron, OH

Foghat plays the Breakaway Theatre in Akron,Ohio 10-09-83, a nice lounge/concert hall set up for smaller concerts. I had 2nd row center stage for this show with Dave, Roger, Erik, Rob, and enjoyed the view. Foghat started with And I Do Just What I Want from In The Mood For Something Rude followed by My Babe. It was nice to see Dave up close watching his rythym guitar playing and how he silently counts out to help himself and keep the band in time. Stone Blue was played with a nice end out solo by Erik on slide, along with Fool For The City. I had Dave's guitar pick hit me in the forehead at the end of Honey Hush and fall into my lap (still have it). They played a few tunes from their latest effort Zig-Zag Walk namely Thats What Love Can Do, Down The Road A Piece and Silent Treatment if not in that order, along with Slipped Tripped Fell In Love. Live Now Play Later was a standout for me with some nice tight solo work from Erik. Slow Ride and IJWMLTY finished out the show but not before Kim Simmonds from Savoy Brown joined them on stage for a few numbers most notably Louisiana Blues. Tt was a nice crisp show in an accoustically great setting, aside from Rob Alter's bass playing, which in my eyes and ears left much to be desired, he just didn't seem a good fit, hence his short tenure. it was nice to hear some early 80's pieces by Foghat as well as pre-Foghat Savoy Brown songs as well.
