Concert Reviews '98

03/19/98 ... Minneapolis, MN ... The Cabooze
I saw an ad in the paper that Foghat would be playing a show in Minneapolis. I also saw that a radio station was promoting the show and tickets would only cost 93 cents!

The Cabooze is not the biggest of bars; able to hold several hundred people. The place was packed with old-time fans and newcomers who wanted to check out the band. The old-time fans started getting their spot near the stage almost an hour before the show was to begin. Stories of past concerts band trivia questions were exchanged.

At 9:00 the band came on stage: Tony in a green Italian-looking suit, Rod in a black suit and pants, Roger with his traditional vest and headband, and Dave in a metallic-gray shirt and the usual Converse hightop shoes.

Rod launched into "Louisiana Blues" and got the house hopping. Dave played the first solo before Rod took over on slide. "Driving Wheel" was the second song on the list which helped keep the energy high. Before the next song Dave said "I know it gets pretty chilly up here in Minnesota. We're gonna get a little hot and sweaty tonight. This next song is from our last album, Return of the Boogie Men, kind of a collectors item." From there they launched into "Love Ain't Nothing But Trouble" and then "Stone Blue". The next song was the only song off the new album, "Road Cases." "Rock Your House" is an uptempo house-rocker that will certainly be a concert favorite. The rest of the set was "It Hurts Me Too", "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You." After a long, loud applause Foghat came beck on stage for an encore of "Fool For The City" and "Slow Ride."

Even though the band had only played one show together recently, the set seemed pretty tight. There were occasions where the band must've felt they were off - Dave and Rod would look at each other and smirk, then jump right back on beat. The slide guitar solos by Rod were extraordinary! Rod played his Gibson guitar the entire night except for "I Just Want To Make Love To You" and "Fool For The City" where he played his Fender SRV Stratocaster. The glue holding the band together was the backbeat by the bass and drum engine of Tony and Roger. Dave had his usual fun with the crowd; letting them strum his guitar, and jumping around the stage to fire everyone up.

After the show I had a chance to talk with the band and some people from the new record label. "Road Cases" is still due to be released on May 5th. There are no current plans to release any of the songs as singles. Tony is excited about the new album and quite proud of the last album. He commented, "Very basic blues, but that's what we like and we sound good doing it." Rod enjoys the tours although he likes to "go home and collapse" between tours. He's been too busy to finish his guitar video, although it is still in the works. Dave likes the enthusiasm of the crowds that have been showing up to see the recent tours. He also likes the webpage and checks it out frequently "to know where he's going the next day!" I asked Roger if he had any words for his fans: "Yeah, buy the new album!"

A fun night with a great band! It does get pretty chilly in Minnesota, but for at least one night, a bunch of us were sure hot and sweaty!

04/18/98 ... Suffolk, VA ... Suffolk Airport (outdoor)

It was about 8:30 and the band was ready to go! It was raining and cold, but the crowd was going crazy. They hit the stage at 8:45 and opened with Louisiana Blues and then went into Drivin' Wheel. The only new song they did off Road Cases was Rock Your House--which was a kickin track. The band was very animated and seemed to enjoy themselves despite the rain. Afterwards, they came out and signed autographs and what not. It was a great show and there new tour sounds like it is gonna be a killer. Tony said they are trying to get Dave to bring up some other songs like Honey Hush, or Road Fever. I hope so--FOGHAT always makes for a night to remember!

04/24/98 ... Clarksville, TN ... The Warehouse

We have been to a lot of places over the years, I am so thankful that the cops and the fire marshal stayed away. The place was packed with people ready to rock or kick some ass, whatever came first. We ended up with great seats, well not seats ... we were on the side of the stage leaning on Foghat's equipment boxes. Other than having a few technical problems, the guys were great as usual. First time we had heard "Rock This House", and did they ever! We didn't get a chance to talk to the guys, but we should have some good pictures to send you soon. We hope to see the band when they appear in St. Louis, MO in July.

05/23/98 ... El Paso, TX ... Wet N Wild

The show of Foghat at El Paso, TX was great!. They played in a water park named Wet N Wild as part of the Balloon Festival sponsored by KLAQ radio. (I drove five hours from Chihuahua, Mexico to get to this place). The place was very nice and I saw some very young people. The bad thing was that the band played only a few songs.

The band began with "Louisiana Blues" and then played "Drivin' Wheel" from the "Night Shift" album. Lonesome Dave then announced "Love Ain't Nothing But Trouble" from the "Return of the Boogie Man". Then "Stone Blue" and "Rock Your House", this from the last album "Road Cases". Then they played "It Hurts Me Too" in a blues version followed by "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You". The encore was "Fool For The City" and "Slow Ride"!

05/24/98 ... Washington, PA ... Washington County Fairgrounds

I had the pleasure of seeing Foghat live last night (5/24/98) at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Washington, Pennsylvania. I attended the concert with my wife & a friend of mine from out of town. We really enjoyed the show. The band took the stage around 9:15 with lightning flashing overhead & played until around 10:45. Despite the rainy night & subsequent small turn out, the band rocked & genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. From the opening notes, they proved this was no oldies band just "going through the motions" on some nostalgia tour, but a lively, current, viable, boogie-woogie, good time rock & roll band having some fun. Seeing all the original band members together was a real treat. Experiencing Foghat live brought back a lot of old memories & made some new ones as well.

06/06/98 ... Santa Fe, NM ... Camel Rock Casino

This was a last minute booking for Foghat, as I was prepered to see them in Albuquerque on June 4th. Anyways, the Camel Rock Casino is about 90 min. due north from Albuquerque, and this show was on a Saturday night, a big plus for us 9-to-5 'ers!!!

We got to the casino about 6pm. We were impressed at the stage and lighting set up that they had there. From the looks of things, classic rock shows at Indian gaming casinos will be the wave of the future. It was a free show; first come, first served for choice seats. Even the air conditioning worked great.

The show started at 8:30. Lonesome Dave was dressed in a blue button up shirt, slacks, tennis shoes and his hair is longer these days. From the first note, to the final note of SLow Ride, Foghat locked into a solid, funky groove. By mid-show, everyone was out on the floor dancing and having a laugh at Lonesome Dave's jokes and comments about the 70's. Foghat never let me down in concert, and personally, I'd much rather see them in a club or small auditorium instead of one of those package deals like Summerdaze where they only get about 30-40 mins. to play.

Finally bought Road Cases there after the show (thanks Laura!!), and after hearing the two new studio tracks (Angel of Mercy & Tear you down), I wish they could have played one of these songs at the show. Maybe next time guys?? See you on the 4th of July in Farmington, NM!!!!!!

06/17/98 ... Phoenix, AZ ... Toolies

I have seen Foghat numerous times. I am originally from Port Jefferson, NY, where some members of Foghat lived for many years. I have seen them play at a charity event in a high school in 1980 ("Tight Shoes tour"), when they were huge. I have also seen them in arenas, when they were headlining, and groups like Blackfoot and Triumph were opening for them. Then came the years that Rod Price was not with the group, I call them the Erik Cartwright years. Although Erik was a great guitar player, and a very nice person to meet, and Foghat put out some fine music, they were not the same in concert. These were the years that Foghat traded with Triumph, and Foghat opened for them in arenas. Then came the descent to clubs, when fans didn't know which Foghat was going to show up that night. Was Lonesome Dave with the group or not??

Well, I am ecstatic to stay the Foghat is back and so is Rod Price. I never understood why Foghat took such an incredible tumble in the 80s until I saw Foghat last night at Toolie's in Phoenix, Arizona. Rod Price was the missing link. The guitar combination of Rod and Lonesome Dave is incredible. And Foghat opened their concert with a Rod Price song that I had not heard in a while off of the "Rock & Roll" album, "What a Shame". Without hesitation, they cruised through "Fool for the City" and "Drivin' Wheel". After those 3 songs, the crowd of about 400 sounded like an arena crowd. I was standing directly in front of Rod Price and with his amp cranked up to "11", I could still hear the crowd singing above the music. The band followed with 7 more songs, "Nothing but Trouble", "Stone Blue", "Louisiana Blues", "It Hurts Me Too", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Rock your House", " I Just Wanna Make Love to You". Then they encored with 2 more, "Bad Bad Lovin'" and "Slow Ride".

What amazed me about the concert, was that the crowd got progressively louder as the night went along and went completely bezerk when Foghat went into "Slow Ride". When they left the stage, everyone wanted more. I personally could have gone for another 30 minutes of songs like "Honey Hush", and stuff off of Tight Shoes and Boogie Motel. I believe that Foghat is trying to send a message that they are back for good and they are going to stick to their blues rock roots and not play their more "pop" songs, like "Third Time Lucky." I respect that.

To wrap up, the band was tight and sounded great. Though the years on the road show on their faces, they sound as fresh as they did 20 years ago. That is a testament of a great rock group. If you have not seen them live since the original members have reformed, please go see them ... you will not be disappointed. I hope to see Foghat put out a new album of completely new material in the near future.

06/20/98 ... Bay St. Louis, MS ... Casino Magic

Went see FOGHAT at the Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis Mississippi on the 20th of June. Being a true blue diehard Foghat fan I'd been pumped about the show for a couple of weeks, knowing that I would see them 2 more times in the next week at the Texas Club in Baton,Rouge La. and the House of Blues in New Orleans, La.(lucky me!!)

Me and a buddy from work who had never seen Foghat before, and who is 11 years younger than me went check them out. I'd been telling him all week that if he liked to hear some good guitar playing just wait to you hear Rod and Dave play (especially slide guitar). The band opened up with What a Shame off of the rock and roll albumn which was a real treat to hear. As soon as Rod Price started pickin his guitar my buddy kept telling me through the whole song, "Man, that Big Boy sure can Jam". He was definitely impressed and enjoyed the show. He's also gonna go to the other two shows plus about 10 others from work too.

Thanks, Foghat for another great show and I'm looking forward to Tuesday and Wednsday night. Song list (What A Shame, Drivin Wheel, Love Ain't Nothin But Trouble, Stone Blue, Fool For The City, It Huts Me Too, Sweet Home Chicago, Rock Your House, I Just Wanna Make Love To You,then came back out and played Bad Bad Lovin and Slow Ride).

06/21/98 ... Atlanta, GA ... Lakewood Amphitheatre

I saw Foghat in atlanta on father's day it was a great show. I took my dad to see the show as he is the one who taught me to appreciate good ol' rock n' roll. He has been a Foghat fan for years and I thought it would be cool to do that for fathers day. It was an awesome show a good time was had by all.

06/23/98 ... Baton Rouge, LA ... Texas Club

I went see Foghat for the 2nd time in 4 days and man what a show. There was a nice size crowd there, I would say about 1500 to 2000, maybe more and everyone there was definitely enjoying themselves.

The crowd was into every song they played singing along and admiring the antics of Lonesome Dave. Everyone was definitely enjoying Rod Price's guitar playing, and Tony and Roger kept the beat going masterfully. I heard many and I mean many people comment nothin' but good about Rod's guitar playing. I was standing about 5 ft. from the stage and let me tell you he was on fire.

These guys are just getting better and better and it seems that they are having a lot of fun up on stage. Thanks, Foghat for another rockin evening that was enjoyed by myself and everyone there. If anyone out there hasn't had a chance to see them yet, get out and go check them out, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I'll be rockin' again tonight in New Orleans at the House of Blues. This will bring back memories of seeing them at the Warehouse in New Orleans (I know they're gonna kick ass!!)

07/18/98 ... Waukesha, WI ... Waukesha County Fair

Foghat played a double bill with the Marshall Tucker Band at the Waukesha County Fair. They came on first at 7:30, so it was still light out when they started, and the sun set during the show until it was dark for the encore. They played a 75 minute set, it was a beautiful night and a big crowd.

Having seen them four times the past two years, I was hoping they would change the set list a bit and I was not disapointed. As Rod started playing the riff of the first song I didn't recognize it at first, then the band kicked into "What A Shame"! Wow, this was my 14th Foghat show, and it was the first time I've heard them do that one and it was great. It got a good response from the audience too. Rod seemed to miss his cue to end the song and he laughed and shook his head while rolling his eyes, then went around one more time. Next was "Fool for the City", "Nothin' But Trouble", "Drivin' Wheel", "Rock Your House", "Stone Blue", "Sweet Home Chicago", and "I Just Want To Make Love To You". The encore was "Bad, Bad Lovin' and of course "Slow Ride."

When Dave introduced "Rock Your House", Rod was at the back of the stage until he remembered he had to come up front to start the song, I heard him say "Sorry, I forgot how it starts." I also noticed him talking to himself (or his guitar) during his solo in Stone Blue. He would say things like "Come on baby" and "Oh yeah". After "Slow Ride" he flung his pick at me but it landed on the other side of the wooden security wall in front of the stage, which I didn't hesitate for a second to jump over and snatch it up before the security guys came running over. I also bought a "Road Cases" T-shirt and poster, but because another band was coming on there was no meet and greet to get it signed. I took some photos which I will be sending.

07/19/98 ... Cadott, WI .. Chippewa Valley Rock Fest

I was surprised to see such a small crowd Sunday afternoon at the Rockfest. A meager 2000 folks were milling around and setting up their lawn chairs at 12:30pm when I arrived, and not many more than that had arrived at 1:00 pm when the boys walked out. This was probably the greatest stoke of luck for me, because it enabled me to have one of those incredible concert experiences that come around far too rarely. The Rockfest setup in Cadott has 22 rows of VIP reserved seats in front of the stage with festival hillside seating behind this. Cut through the middle of the VIP seating is a sunken walkway through which the general admission folks can walk up front to take photos in front of the stage. Well, luckily for yours truly, there was absolutely no one in this walkway..so....away I go up front to snap a couple of quick photos with my disposable Kodak. After talking to the security up front, I was allowed to linger for quite a while upon the step leading upward to the stage, where a short chain link fence kept you from joing the band on stage. This is where things got interesting for me.

Dave and Roger were the first two on stage, and Dave starting checking out his guitar tuning and Roger was getting setup behind his kit. I yelled out to Dave first, who promptly turned around and gave me a great photo pose and smile! Then I called out to Roger, who stood up from behind his kit and gave me the old In The Mood For Something Rude pose for a photo! I thought that was pretty cool by itself. But then Roger picks up one of his sticks and tosses it 40 feet through the air to me!! It was pretty beat up as though he had been using it the night before, but you can still make out the Foghat logo and Roger Earl signature on it. That really made my weekend!

The set was great, and the small crowd was energetic and appreciative after the first couple of songs. Unfortunately, I did not write down the exact order of the songs, but to the best of my recollection the setlist included Louisiana Blues, Fool For the City, Sweet Home Chicago, something off the new album, Nothin' But Trouble, Driving Wheel, Stone Blue, IJWMLTY, and Slow Ride as the encore. There was a guy in the front row of the VIP seating that had brought all of the Foghat vinyl albums and even a Savoy Brown album. Dave made mention of this guy a couple of times throughout the set, including a reference to people being stuck in the 70's where he pointed towards Tony dressed in his green Italian looking suit and dyed blonde hair!

If anyone out there attended the Rockfest and was there for Foghat, I'd love to have you email me at jkriegel@fyiowa.infi.net. I was the guy dancing on the walkway stairs wearing the black Zildjian baseball cap! Keep on Slow Ridin' !
